Taveras, who played 28 games for Seattle a season ago, was Baltimore's leadoff man in the bottom of the ninth with his club trailing 4-2 at home. In a spot where he could have jump-started a comeback, he instead struck out in what very well could be the most embarrassing fashion possible of the modern era. Sitting on a 2-2 count, Taveras took a pitch well outside and began walking to first base, thinking he had just been walked. He even began taking off his elbow guard before realizing that he had the pitch count wrong.

WHO doesn't expect large Hantavirus outbreak US blockade keeps stranglehold on Iran's economy Calipari says transfer portal rules should be the NCAA's main focus, not adding more teams to March Madness Ricky Cobb cuts through the noise on the proposed NCAA Tournament expansion to 76 teams. The expansion of the NCAA Tournament is here despite the vast majority of those involved in college basketball not seeming to be sold on the move whatsoever. NCAA power brokers have the final say, and Division I men's and women's basketball committees reportedly voted in favor of expanding the NCAA Tournament to 76 teams from 68 on Thursday. With the signs having long been pointing to the tournament growing in size, everyone has an opinion on it, and John Calipari may have the best, and certainly the most stomachable of them all. The Arkansas head coach has been among the masses who are anti-expansion, but seems to have accepted it, even before the formal voting took place.
Generative models for decision-making under distributional shift
Cheng, Xiuyuan, Zhu, Yunqin, Xie, Yao
Many data-driven decision problems are formulated using a nominal distribution estimated from historical data, while performance is ultimately determined by a deployment distribution that may be shifted, context-dependent, partially observed, or stress-induced. This tutorial presents modern generative models, particularly flow- and score-based methods, as mathematical tools for constructing decision-relevant distributions. From an operations research perspective, their primary value lies not in unconstrained sample synthesis but in representing and transforming distributions through transport maps, velocity fields, score fields, and guided stochastic dynamics. We present a unified framework based on pushforward maps, continuity, Fokker-Planck equations, Wasserstein geometry, and optimization in probability space. Within this framework, generative models can be used to learn nominal uncertainty, construct stressed or least-favorable distributions for robustness, and produce conditional or posterior distributions under side information and partial observation. We also highlight representative theoretical guarantees, including forward-reverse convergence for iterative flow models, first-order minimax analysis in transport-map space, and error-transfer bounds for posterior sampling with generative priors. The tutorial provides a principled introduction to using generative models for scenario generation, robust decision-making, uncertainty quantification, and related problems under distributional shift.
